Hurley Lock to Sonning Bridge

12 August - Historical Villages

Beautiful peaceful mooring spot in Hurley

Before leaving we had a walk into the historic village of Hurley to visit the village store for a few things, we found the two pubs The Olde Bell dating from 1135 and The Rising Sun, not as old. Both not open at that early hour of course. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hurley,_Berkshire

Loved this sign

Monk Barn

We looked at the church on the way back, A history back to Saxon times, time as a Priory, that is till the time of Henry 8th and his sweeping changes to the Church systems.

A historic and pretty village, we returned to the boat and set off up river, cruising pass some very impressive homes (how the other half live) and did a load of washing.
Another home that was once part of an Abby

Stopped for an on board lunch at Henley, famous for boat racing, and cruised on, admiring more stately homes and Gin Palaces on the river.

We stopped for the night on free moorings just above Sonning Lock at 3.30, roast lamb shanks on the boat for dinner 10/10. Vicki did a walk around Sonning to find some wine for dinner.

The Bull Inn, 16th Century pub - very cute

St Andrews Church

Another pretty little village, off to Reading for supplies tomorrow morning.

Total - 11 miles, 4 locks
