Aspen Bridge to Riley Green

14 May

Pete woke a little the worse from last night after spending the evening in Hare and Hounds. Not a early start on the canal.

Blackburn is a less than attractive town with many old mills being converted for a new life or being left shabby. This must have been a very busy town once upon a time, There use to be two hundred factory chimneys and in 1910 there were over 87000 textile looms operated by 42000 workers, many of the children as young as 12.

This was a different lock, you do have to guess how they work sometimes. This actually opens the gates though I think it is harder than pushing them.

It is a shame to see so much rubbish in the canals but it is pleasing to see some new life returning.

Once we left Blackburn behind the countryside improved and you travel through some very interesting back yards. Our journey continued with us seeing more paper mills and reservoirs and even a former site for contagious diseases hospital.

Think this must be one of the patients. Its actually a tree trunk.

We stopped the night at Riley Green which also has a pub beside it but with our efforts from last night it was a no show for us.  Still no diesel or gas though we have passed a marina and shall check out in morning.

TOTAL - 11 miles - 6 Locks - 4 Aquaducts
