Skipton to East Marton
Leaving Skipton there were more swing bridges but also more boats to help, especially with one bridge which took crew from three boats to actually move it.We were lucky enough to meet up with Steam Boat Whistle Down the Wind and crew at the first lock - Holme Bridge Lock just before Gargraves. Vicki and Sue started talking and the outcome was we shared the next 12 locks. They had 4 crew and with Vicki helping this made the locks a breeze. (So says Pete and Geoff who just sat on the back of their boats).
While locks were being filled Geoff did a little maintenance with his oil can
Skipper Geoff explained about his Steam Narrowboat which he built himself. Runs on Welsh Steam Coal as it burns with less smoke (also super hot, when he started this project he thought that coal came in one sort ,lumps, and has learnt a lot since). It has a 1920s motor and a new boiler that he had to have made. Two whistles and an impressive chimney that lowers for bridges.
What a fun day with great company, they left us at East Marton unfortunately pub was closed for refurbishing and Restaurant shuts at 5pm and Pony club was in quarantine. Oh well just as well we have our own supplies.
