19 May - Liverpool
Liverpool for day by train took 45 minutes and saved days. Have since
found out we would never have been able to go in by canal as it is all booked
out with the Three Queens coming to port on the weekend.
Headed to Maritime museum which was well worth it covered
the history of Liverpool as a major port and trade centre also Titanic and
Lusitania losses and a floor on Slavery. Definitely worth the visit. http://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/maritime/
Pete next to vehicles just for a change
The exhibitions in the museum were spectacular,
below is a statue made from chains
Around 2pm Simon (Dianne’s friend) picked us up and showed us some
sights of Liverpool. An art gallery set up by the Levers of Sunlight soap fame. http://www.liverpoolmuseums.org.uk/ladylever/history/lever.aspx
Not to my taste but a major collection of art works. Vicki
loved it.
We then had a tour of Beatle homes where they grew up.
Ringo’s is condemned, John’s is a historic place and Paul has a sign. Georges
is just a house 2 up and 2 down. He moved straight to a house with 26 bedrooms.
Thanks Simon for
showing us around well worth having a tour by a Liverpudlian.
Batteries were well down on boat with not having moved for the day.

20 May – Wigan Pier to Leigh
Ran the engine for 7 hours today and filled up with water as
well down as we had not filled up for 5 days.
Miserable day and we set off in full wet weather gear. Went
up one lock turned towards Manchester and down 2 locks. 1 with keepers and 1
with boat coming up. Lunch at Dover Bridge – hot soup and hot scones both
needed. Pushed on to Plank Lane Lift Bridge http://canalplan.org.uk/gazetteer/gfeq and found the well hidden water
point and filled up and put washing on. Tank was almost empty.
We went on to Leigh mooring opposite the Aldi and pub also
the end of the Leeds Liverpool Canal
TOTAL - 7 miles – 3 locks – 1 Lift bridge – 3 Aqueducts
21 May - Leigh to Little Bollington
Set off around 9 and under first bridge we leave the Leeds Liverpool and are now on Bridgewater Canal. No Locks or bridges you cruise through Manchester suburbs. They are wide and long, straight past houses, factories, boats and moorings. We go over the Manchester Shipping Channel via Barton Aqueduct and make the decision to go right and head towards Trent & Mersey - shall do Manchester city on our return to Sheffield.
Kelloggs the smell of cornflakes as you go by.
Swan playing chicken with the boat, decided to run
Linotype Works 1897
Buildings that look like ships
Dianne leaves the boat tonight after dinner. Nick is coming to collect her.
Have enjoyed showing her the slow life and a different way to look at her country.
