Westport Lake to Stone (Trent & Mersey canal)

Early morning walk around Westport lake

Marquee going up in the park as 500 special needs children were coming to a free festival put on by council. The girls told me to come back about 10 but said we would have moved on by then and wished them luck.

We took off around 9 and moved through the Industrial Wasteland of Stoke on Trent. Middleport you are able to see different eras of buildings as you noticed new bricks joining old. Kilns are now very few though one has been restored and is a cafe, a bit early for morning tea.

We had planned on stopping after first three locks and checking Etruria Junction which holds a museum unfortunately that was also closed as they had a break in last night.

On we went through more locks with the help of Robert who once volunteered for Canal Trust but didn’t like it, so he does it on his own now. Extremely helpful young man and he made the journey a lot easier.

Stopped for lunch at a pub called the Plume of Feathers with Neil Morrissey.

The food was good and the place was busy for a Wednesday and who was picking up the empty glasses from the next table but Neil himself the famous actor. He said hello and picked us as Kiwi’s which is not the norm as we are normally called Aussies. So lunch with a famous landlord the Plume of Feathers 8/10 for Pete’s fish and chips but 9/10 for my salmon.

We should have taken notice of this as when we got back to the boat we realised no one had paid, nearly lunch on Neil. We did go back and pay :-)

We travelled on another hour through four more locks and have now moored up at Bridge 96 in Stone and shall be off to the pub shortly.

TOTAL - 11 miles - 13 locks and 3 small aqueducts
