1 September - Traffic jam at locks
We spotted Tui again just before Alvecote
Passing through Alvecote Marina you see the last of the boats that had been at rally
We moved off at 9 and cruised the outskirts of Tamworth, we found a Co-op right beside some moorings so Vicki did a quick shop while I watched the boat doing a load of washing, the engine needs to be running. After that we moved up to the 2 Glascote locks, before the shopping we had passed the Marina where there had been a rally over the weekend, lots of old style boats were still there and lots were leaving, this was causing a bottle neck at the locks and it took 2 hrs to descend 2 locks but with lots of boats to look at and people to talk to, the boat behind us has a Bollinger 2 stroke oil engine in it, its the last one that's the original engine in the original hull, and is started by heating the cylinder head with a blow torch for about 15 minutes and then hand cranking. This engine will run on a range of oil based fuels.
This is the boat that was behind us and note the chimney on her
I helped this boat into the lock while Pete went to sort out the one below which I then drove into, no longer the crowds so was happy to give it a go. Queue was just one way now going down.
We carried on through a patch of very heavy rain and moored at 3 pm in Hopwas between 2 pubs the Red Lion, and the Tame Otter, Dinner plans have changed.
At 6pm we went to the Tame Otter it was closer, and had dinner Vicki had Prawn cocktail and a Duck and Pomegranate Salad and gave it 9/10, I had a Indian Kofta starter, and Scottish Mussels in a bread covered pan, with garlic and cream, 10/10, not given lightly and not NZ Mussels by a long shot, but very very good. The Tame Otter is a part of the Vintage Inns group worth a visit.
