11 October - Across Leeds
Up late and blog published for the last two days, lunch on boat and then off in car to Dianne's in Horsforth for Sunday Dinner. Vicki took off on her own and went down memory lane of a journey she did with her folks in 1975 and subsequent trips back to the UK.
Airedale View in Woodlesford was were my dad (Eddie) was born and his mother (Clara) passed. Farrer Lane, Oulton was the last home he had in the UK before immigrating to NZ and where his father (James) passed. I remember going into this house in the 80s on another trip to the area with Mum and Dad - special memories.
Oulton Church is where many of the Walkers are buried. On a trip here in 2007 Dianne and I couldn't find Margery who was our Aunt. I did this time - Dad must have been helping. I have taken some great photos to add to Ancestry for our family tree of the area and thoroughly enjoyed going down memory lane.
On the way to Horsforth we stopped at Kirkstall Abbey. This is on the main road to Horsforth and on the Leeds Liverpool Canal which is directly behind it but in the 40 years of passing this way Vicki has never visited this particular Abbey, so we did - probably very similar to 40 years ago.
Impressive set of ruins set in lovely grounds with good signage explaining what was what and where things were. We even got an ice cream to walk around with. The first for this holiday.
Kirstall Abbey is a ruined Cistercian Monastery on the bank of River Aire. It was founded c 1152 and was disestablished during the Dissolution of Monasteries under Henry VIII
Then it was off to Dianne's, we got there and I had to go and pick up her boys from the pub (The Boat) where they had stopped as they walked to their mothers. So I had to have a pint with them and then back we went.
A 10/10 dinner - Lamb with torn bread and apricot stuffing and courgette cake and champagne to finish. Thank you Dianne it was a beautiful meal with superb company. xx
Sorry our Rachael & Matt the photo I took of you was very blurred, probably the wine xx
TOTAL - 1 trip down memory lane, 1 abbey visit and 1 family dinner
12 October - Spring Clean or should we say Autumn Clean
We were up and about usual time and took rental car back to Enterprise at 10. This is our rental company of choice as they pick up and drop off from Marinas. Back on board at 10.30 and a days spring cleaning ahead. Also managed to get pump out so we are ready for off in the morning.
The day was completed with one clean boat and washing done, just as we finished cousins appear in time for drinks. It was good catching up with Steve and Nick wanted to make sure we didnt pinch his TomTom. Pleasant afternoon.
