Whitley bridge to Went Aqueduct.

14 October - Slowing the journey to Sheffield

Up at our usual time and doing our usual tasks, then Vicki went off to find a shop for eggs and bread etc. She found the pub that is in the canal book but it was closed down, just as well we didn't rush out there yesterday hungry and thirsty. we moved on down stream.  This canal as I said in the last blog is quite featureless if you don't count the Power Stations (7) and tractors busy ploughing and planting winter crops.
Aire & Calder navigation is nice and wide

First lock of the day was manned by 3 keepers, boiling the kettle for morning tea

By the time we reached Pollington it was lunch time so I had to hop off and exercise my finger while the keepers drank their tea.

We did a load of washing on the way and stopped for lunch at the start of the New Junction Canal one of the last canals in the system to be built. It runs in a straight line for 5 and a half miles, not wanting to do all the good bits to soon we stayed put after lunch and will tackle that tomorrow.

Turning into New Junction heading for Sheffield.
We were last here on 1 May and woke with a frost, it seems along time ago now.

 Our sunset tonight
We also had to change a gas bottle in the afternoon after 14 days use, without using the heating a bottle will last 2 months, the moral here is have a boat with a log or coal fire, and keep it going.

TOTAL - 6 miles, 2 locks, 1 load of washing and a visit into Eggborough for supplies
