Abingdon to Oxford - Osney lock

17 August - The last of the River Thames to Oxford

Up and about and away at 9am, we cruised up river to Oxford. We shared water points and locks with some Nb's and Plastics, the Plastics were from a marina on the coast at the mouth of the Thames, and were going to Oxford as a group they can only get to here as they are to high to go any further.
Bye to Abingdon and into our first lock

On to the water point after another narrow and then cruising up the River not a lot to see until you get to Oxford but very pretty, you can see the season is starting to change, beautiful and peaceful.

Must be getting close to Oxford the gongozzlers are out about again

We took advice from the keeper at Osney lock and found a mooring, 24hr, about 200m further on, a street on one side and factories on the other, and a pub, The Punter about 30m away from the boat. We had a light lunch at The Punter,  8/10,

Last lock of the day - Osney Lock
Boating clubs all along this stretch of the river.

We walked to the Rail and Bus station and caught the Hop on Hop off tour bus and did the circuit of the town.

Oxford was a very busy place with hundreds of churches, colleges, libraries and people. To much to take in on one hit but the bus commentary gives you an idea of the history of the place. The architecture is quite amazing.

Highly recommend these tours as a way to see a city, you get the idea of city and then you can get off where you what to explore more if you wish. Unfortunately we are nearly too full of history to explore another city, it starts to become a blur. Back on the boat at 3.30pm and looking forward to returning to the canals tomorrow.

TOTAL 8.5 miles, 4 locks, 1 hop on hop off Oxford
